Durbin to ask Bush to commute Ryan sentence
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is asking President Bush to commute ex-Gov. George Ryan's sentence to time served. Durbin made the announcement today -- a week after expressing sympathy for Ryan and former first lady Lura Lynn Ryan.

If we're in recession, what's with all the shopping? A leading national group of economists have declared that the U.S. is in a recession and that it began last December. Many economists believe the current downturn will last until the middle of 2009, and will be the most severe slump since the 1981-82 recession.

Lifestyles Service honors victims of school fire Fifty years is a long time to cry. Della Maffiola wept again Sunday as she remembered her son Joseph, killed in the Our Lady of the Angels school fire 50 years ago today. "It feels like yesterday,'' she said. Joseph, 10, and 91 other students and three nuns who died in the Chicago blaze were remembered in a Sunday mass at Holy Family Church, 1080 W. Roosevelt.

Entertainment 'Nothing' stars brave the Chicago chill Debra Messing has a dancing scene in her new movie, but that's not the only time she got to shake it on the set of "Nothing Like the Holidays." "I was filming a winter scene on a front porch in Humboldt Park," she says, "and real hypothermia set in. I hear it was your worst winter in about 100 years. It was raining ice and about 10 below. My whole body was shaking, and then it was time for my closeup."

Business It's official: We're in a recession The U.S. economy has been in a recession since December 2007, the National Bureau of Economic Research said Monday. The NBER — a private, nonprofit research organization — said its group of academic economists who determine business cycles met and decided that the U.S. recession began last December.
